Leo Sayer
A Music Legend
Leo Sayer has sold 30 million records. And he has not finished yet.
Recently he spent 2 weeks on top of the charts in the UK and that song,
a dance remix of 'Thunder In My Heart is due to be released in
Australia on the very day the Archibald Prize exhibition opens. It is
expected to be a chart topper here as well.
Put simply Leo Sayer is a phenomenon. Hits like Moonlighting or You
Make Me Feel Like Dancing have trancended raw numbers of record sales
and have become a central part of the musical fabric that defined a
generation. Sales of his new album and the No. 1 remix track
demonstrate that he has become one of those rare survivors who can
re-invent themselves and go on to create a new audience.
The Singer With An Open Heart
Central to Leo Sayer's success is his sensitivity. It takes just a few
minutes talking with Leo to discover that he is a beautiful human
being, genuine, and open, with a wonderment about performing that is
very special. He told me that when he walks onto the stage the audience
are indivduals out there, separate from him, but that when he starts
singing he is able to take them with him to a special place that they
go to together. He said that he feels privileged to be able to
do that, and he loves the fact that he gets to do that regularly.
Returning To His Roots
The photo is of Leo performing for a home town crowd at the Splash FM
concert in Worthing. Although he has
scaled the heights of stardom he has never forgotten the basic truths
that make up Leo Sayer. There was a time when others forced compromises
in the interests of the next hit. Not anymore, nowadays Leo sings for
the sheer joy, he writes and performs music purely as an artist
struggling to say something deep in his heart. Leo Sayer does not have
to prove anything, he has 'been there - done that'. Leo Sayer has come
home, and you can hear it in his voice.
